Choosing the right school is important and we are ready to partner with you in making such a key educational decision. We invite you to explore our website to get an understanding of our diverse community and the values that guide our school.

As we welcome students who have attended public, private or have been homeschooled, the friendly and accepting nature of our student body and faculty allows students to feel comfortable regardless of their background or learning style.

In addition to a strong university preparatory program in the arts, sciences, and humanities, we offer: a values-based education that speaks to the challenges of contemporary life; a warm, welcoming and responsive community and an opportunity for students to participate in the ongoing development of their own school and education.

We believe that a small student population is key to providing a personalized, excellent education.  Our current student-to-teacher ratio is 10:1. Our policy is to enroll any student who is selected in our lottery admission process, and, who has been promoted by any other NC Public System or by any other State school system.  In the case of homeschooled students or students coming from unaccredited private schools, Kestrel Heights School will base all enrollment decisions on nationally recognized testing results the student may have completed or we will have such student take a series of tests to assess their appropriate grade placement.

Tours

The best way to get to know Kestrel Heights School is to visit us.  As you walk through our school you will interact with our diverse and talented students, meet our dedicated faculty and feel the warm and caring community that is Kestrel Heights School.

During the months of January and February, tours of all of our locations will be available. Tours are offered on Tuesdays at the following times:

  • 10:00 am for Elementary School (4900 Prospectus)
    • April 4th and 25th, May 9th and 23rd 
  • 11:00 am for Middle School (4900 Prospectus)
  • 10:00 am for High School (4700 S Alston)

Please contact the front office of the school you would like to tour to make a reservation.

The Enrollment/Lottery Process

With the expansion of our 2017-18 K-8, we currently have Kindergarten through 8th grade seats available!   Please complete one application per child and submit to Ms. Vargas in the Admissions office. You are welcome to email, fax, mail or drop off the application in person. .

2017-18 New Student Application 

The lottery was held on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 3:30 pm. Our lottery is a computer generated lottery. The prospective applicants are randomized by a computer program.  Parents may attend the lottery, but it is not required.  Attending the lottery does not improve chances of admission.  Families will be notified by email regarding their lottery results within one week following the day of the lottery. 

 Any applicant who is offered a seat either in the initial lottery or off the wait list will be emailed the enrollment documentation.  Enrollees have two weeks to complete and return the enrollment documentation.  All wait lists and enrollment will close on the 20th day of the 2017-18 school year.

Lottery Preferences (reference G.S. 115C-238.29F(g)(5a)):

  • Any child who is qualified under the laws of the state for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to a charter school. In order to apply to a charter school, a parent or guardian must be physically living - "domiciled" - in the state of North Carolina at the time of application.  Non-domiciled families must wait until having moved to NC to apply to the school. 
  • Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, Kestrel Heights School may refuse admission to any student who has been expelled or suspended from a public school under G. S. 115C-391 until the period of suspension or expulsion has expired.
  • We will honor sibling preference of currently enrolled students in our lottery drawing. The term "siblings" includes any of the following who reside in the same household: half siblings, step siblings, and children residing in a family foster home to be granted enrollment priority.
  • Sibling applicants with shared birth dates (twins, triplets, etc.) will be admitted in the lottery together.
  • We do not offer surname preference in our lottery.

Returning Registration

The 2017-18 Student Intent form closed on Friday, February 24th.   Please contact Ms. Vargas for any changes to your child's enrollment for next Fall. .

Student Withdrawal Process

For 2017 rising 9th-12th grade students:
Due to the recent decision by the SBE, all rising 9th-12th grade students are required to submit the Enrollment Verification form to Ms. Vargas prior to May 15th.   We will prepare and send your child's academic record to the listed school beginning July 5th.  


For student withdrawing prior to the end of the school year:

  1. Notify the school as soon as you know an estimated departure date
  2. The parent or legal guardian must come into the Admissions Office, located at the High School, to sign the withdrawal papers.  We will give the parent/legal guardian a copy of the school transfer/withdrawal form.
  3. Return all text books, library books and other property of KHS.
  4. Return the high school student parking pass, if applicable.
  5. When the student arrives at his/her new school, the new school should fax or email a request of records to the Admissions office at KHS. 
  6. Upon receipt of this request, the cumulative file will be transferred to the new school through the USPS.
